Haruyo took the phone from Kendell. “My husband never leaves his phone lying around,” she said. “It must have fallen out of his pocket and slid into the cushions.”

“I’m sure,” Kendell said. “But someone was trying to call him. Do you know that number?”

“No, I do not,” she said. “It is unfamiliar. There are text messages from the same number… I feel like I may be invading my husband’s privacy…”

“This is a murder investigation,” Kendell said, looking over Haruyo’s shoulder at the phone. “Can you translate that for us?”

“Yes,” Haruyo said. “The first message says, ‘I know you know’.”

“And your husband’s response?” Kendell pressed.

“‘You are making a mistake. Do not do this,’” Haruyo said. “The other number responds, ‘Stand in my way, and I will break you’.”

“Is that it?” Kendell asked, and Haruyo nodded. “Looks like they continued their conversation over the phone at that point. Do you mind if I take a picture of this for evidence? I know I can’t read it, but it would be good to have.”

“Whatever you need to do,” Haruyo said, handing the phone over to Kendell.

“Any idea what Otōto might be talking to our mystery caller about?” Pauline asked.

“I am afraid not,” Haruyo said. “I do not recognize this number. It looks like it may be a burner phone of some sort, as it is a strange cell number for the area.”

“So someone is contacting your husband via burner phone… This is from yesterday,” Kendell said. “The day before he is killed , he gets a very threatening message from a weird number. I would call that evidence, wouldn’t you, Pauline?”

“Most certainly!” Pauline said. “But the question is, who is it?”

“Let’s go over who all was at the gambling hall,” Kendell suggested. “It wasn’t particularly crowded when it happened… Let’s see… Haruyo and I were at the bar, and there was just one bartender.”

“The bartender is a nice girl,” Haruyo said. “And she has never interacted much with Otōto, so it would be strange for her to have some sort of vendetta against him. I usually did her scheduling and everything.”

“Not to mention that girl was super short,” Kendell said. “Doubt she would have been able to reach the samurai sword up on the wall without anyone hearing her. And she was talking to you at the bar most of the time during the blackout.”

“Okay, so very unlikely suspect,” Pauline said.

“Who all was at the table again?” Kendell asked.

“Myself, and obviously I didn’t do it. Futoshi was dealing. Then there was Asahi and Tadeas… Wait, Asahi?” Pauline spun around where little Asahi was playing on the floor.

“Yes, our little one is named after that Asahi,” Haruyo said. “My husband pulled Asahi into Yakuzo, and Asahi was very grateful for the opportunity. Asahi once took a bullet for my husband during a raid.”

“A raid?” Kendell asked.

“Stupid police came on our turf,” Haruyo said with a dismissive wave. “Asahi stepped between my husband and an officer who was trigger-happy. I was pregnant at the time. We named our child after him.
